From the "KNOW THYSELF" inscription at the Oracle at Delphi to Polonius in Hamlet: "Above all, to thine own self be true." This is a constant theme in the work of humanity. What does it mean?
I don't know.
An answer:
The act of being oneself is a practice of following one's curiosity for your curiosity is your passion. As Joseph Campbell says: "Follow your bliss." Bliss can easily be replaced for "passion" or "heart."
WHAT DO YOU THINK? I'm curious.
I think that the quote means different things to different people, as we all have filters from which we take the world in. To me though, the quote means "Do what you think is right". This is regardless of societal standards. And the only reason I am pursuing the business I am is because I believe that if people did what they loved, then they would do better jobs, and the world would be a better place. I will be an actor regardless of the money I make or the fame I have because I couldn't be happy any other way. I have to do this.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone can possibly know themselves completely. Life is an ever changing journey that will have you climbing up more hills than enjoying the glide down. I also don't know exactly what it means. How could I when small changes happen everyday to a person?
ReplyDeleteThis bit about curiosity though; it really resonates with me. All you can do in life is move forward and often times I've felt lost because of this. I've thought that the future should have more meaning; that everything I do must have a purpose behind it instead of moving forward on impulses into the unknown. It was surprising and liberating to read an act of embracing one's curiosity.
